Living & Dying
Barbara Balfour presents us with a meditative experience with her exhibition Living& Dying on display at YYZ Artist Outlet until December 11.
What the artist presents us with is a series of lithographs containing the words that make up the title of the show. Presented as a series of repetitive lines, much like a truant schoolchild would have to produce, the words blend and fade in a succession of differing hues producing a diaphanous effect in part. As the artist states “but at what point does living become dying.” As you read the text, this is an issue to ponder.
Balfour positions us to confront our own mortality, glimpsing into the future where the veil between this world and the next is inextricably linked. The impending reality between life and death is a ponderous topic, encompassing many thoughts and beliefs which force humans to not only stop and think, but in this case to look.
